Kung Fu Training Vs Real-Life Situation

I have been having a long and never-ending discussion about martial art - in particular the Chinese Martial Art better known as Kung Fu. Alot of people tell me that they have never seen real "Authentic" Kung Fu in use, and that there are actually no such thing as real Kung Fu...it is all just for shows and flowery forms that make beautiful movements nice for the eyes. Well...is it? is there no such thing as real Kung Fu?

I have asked myself these questions many times before, and still find myself wondering about the effectiveness of a technique in a style of martial art. This has also sparked the topic of Martial Art's styles, surely there is no such thing as a martial art style in its purest sense, a kick is just a kick, a punch is just a punch in its rawest definition and form. Various techniques from a particular style can't be said to be a move only for one particular style and not used in other styles, they are surely used by other styles of martial arts, or even by taking different forms and names. One can see the differences of a punch from the praying mantis style compared to Wing Chun's straight chain punches, or even the Shaolin Quan, Taichi Quan and so on. They are punches which is a punch, kicks which are kicks.
Now back to our questions, is there such things as real Kung Fu? Martial Arts used in real fights and combats as it is used in their forms and training. Well, as we said a punch is a punch and kicks are kicks, and that is ultimately what we train to do, whether it's be in the different forms we learn, moves and techniques. They may have fancy names, fancy-flowery movements and looks good to the eye; yet in real fights it is seldom that fanciness gets to be prioritized and replaced by effectiveness and efficiency. Of course, by constant practice and mastery of the techniques and skills, it's not impossible for one to utilize moves and techniques in its full glorious forms, because the key is to develop muscle memory.
